Custom website vs template: why your business deserves more than a copy

A template makes you look like everyone; custom makes you look like you. The real three-year cost, the hidden limits, and what changes when a site is designed around your business.

There's an easy way to tell whether a website was built on a template: open three from the same industry. Same structure, same blocks, same animations, same phrasing. They all look alike — and that's precisely the problem. Your business doesn't resemble any other; your website shouldn't either.

What a template actually does to you

A template is a mold designed to fit as many businesses as possible. You pour in your logo, your text, your photos — and you get what thousands of companies who bought the same mold got. Visitors can't name what they feel, but they feel it: a sense of déjà vu that turns into lower trust. In a market where a customer compares three providers in ten minutes, looking like the other two is a way of disappearing.

Then come the limits you discover afterwards. A template displays; it doesn't do. Booking tied to a real calendar, compliant invoicing, customer follow-up, Arabic with genuine right-to-left layout — all of that needs extensions, workarounds, or simply isn't possible. And the sticker price transforms: every missing function becomes a paid plugin, every update conflict a support ticket, every stage of growth a partial rebuild. The site is never truly yours — it lives on a platform whose use you rent.

What changes with custom

A site designed around your business starts from the opposite question: not "which template do we fill?" but "who are you, who do you speak to, and what must this site do for you?" The design grows out of your identity, not a catalog. The structure follows your customers' real path — the question they have, the proof they look for, the action they want to take. The languages are your customers', written rather than translated. Above all, the site connects to what actually runs your business — booking, payment, invoicing, customer relationships — one system, not a shopfront placed in front of chaos.

That's how we work: every business is treated as a unique case, because it is one. The same trade doesn't mean the same customers, the same constraints, or the same ambition — and a site that ignores that doesn't represent you.

The real math

Compare over three years, not at checkout. Template side: the theme, the platform every month, the extensions, the support, the inevitable rebuild when the business outgrows the mold — plus dependence on a vendor free to change prices and rules. Custom side: a build from €1,500, a monthly partnership covering hosting, security and evolution, and an asset you own. Custom isn't more expensive; it's paid once for what it is instead of rented forever for what it isn't.

How to know what you need

Three questions. Will this site represent you for years? Must it do something — book, sell, invoice, converse? Do your customers speak more than one language? Two yeses, and a template will cost you more than it returns. Thirty minutes on a discovery call is enough to design what your site should be — with a fixed-scope proposal within 48 hours.
